What is karma?
Type of person your soul moves onto after you die, depending on how you have lived
Good karma - good life this time
Bad karma- hard life this time
What is atman?
The belief that there is a part of Brahman (Hindu god) in everyone.
What is reincarnation?
Belief that when your body died, your soul (atman) moves onto another being. Hindus hope they will be reborn into a higher caste (only way is too obey rules of one’s current caste).
What is dharma?
A duty that Hindus need to carry out
What is moksha?
Being freed from cycle of death + rebirth
What is the caste system ?
Class system. Made up of 4 main groups (varnas) that Hindus are assigned to based on abilities/talents. A part of a Varna is called a Jati. (This depends on your job)
What is the hierarchy of the caste system?
Brahmins, Kshatriys, Viashyas, Shudras, Dalits (untouchables)
What are Brahmins?
Mainly teachers who have come from Brahma’s head
What are kshatriys?
Warriors/rulers from Brahma’s arms
What are viashyas?
Traders/farm ewes from brahmas legs
What are Shudras?
Do menial jobs (e,g labouring) Come from brahmas feet.
What are Dalits (untouchables) and the problems associated with being one?
E.g street sweepers
Problems associated with being a Dalit: Poverty, Discrimination, Poor Health, Child Labour, Unemployment
Name the 3 main Hindu gods
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
What are the 3 gods known as?
Trimurti
What does brahma do?
Main god, created the universe
