Pigs Flashcards
What viral respiratory diseases do pigs get
PRRS
SIV
PCV-2
What bacterial respiratory diseases do pigs get
Glasserella paeasuis
Mycoplasma hyopneumonia
Mycoplasma hyorhinis
Streptococcus suits
Pasteurella multiocida
Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia
By what age have most of piglets maternal antibodies gone
8-12 weeks
Factors affecting disease
Stress
Antibodies from vaccination
Pathogenic load
Nutrition
Concurrent disease
Causes of stress in nursery piglets
Feed access
Chilling
Weaning/mixing
Immunosuppression
Water requirements
Factors affecting stress in finisher piglets
Chilling
Immunosuppression
Water requirements
Feed demand
Transport/mixing
Competition/sexual frustration
What is procine respiratory diseases complex
Pneumonia caused by a combination of pathogens often viral and bacterial to include PRRS, SIV, PCV-2 and mycoplasma hyopneumoniae
Clinical signs of PRDC
Coughing
Anorexia
Lethargy
Losing body weight
Increased hair growth
Increased respiratory effort
Increased mortality (acute sudden death possible)
Diagnostic sampling - respiratory
Elisa - bloods, oral fluids
- expect antibodies
- compare groups and previous sampling
PCR - bloods, oral fluids, nasal/tonsillar swabs
- colonisation does not equal disease
Post mortem respiratory diagnostic samples
Histopathology - vital part of all PMs as presence of pathogen + histopathology lead to diagnosis
PCR - tissue, blood, bal, swabs
Culture - tissue, swabs
- some difficult to culture
Signs of vitamin E deficiency
Weak piglets
Elevated HR and RR
Jaundice
Pale MM
Thin heart wall and lung oedema on PM
Pathogen of glassers disease
Glasserella suis
