Physiotherapy in obs and gyn Flashcards
What MSK problems can occur in pregnancy?
- Back pain
- Pelvic girdle/symphysis pubis pain/dysfunction
- DRAM (diastasis of rectus abdominus muscle) - the stretching of the abdominal muscles at the midline during pregnancy.
- Carpal Tunnel
What is pelvic floor dysfunction?
Pelvic floor dysfunction is when there is either too much tension on the pelvic floor muscles (high tone) or not enough (low tone).
Can present with:
- Incontinence of bladder/bowel
- Difficulty with bowel emptying
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Vulvodynia or other male/female pelvic pain
What is vulvodynia?
Chronic pain that affects the vulvar area and occurs without an identifiable cause.
What is the modified oxford scale
Scale used to quantify pelvic floor muscle strength
How many grades for modified oxford scale?
6 grades (grade 0-5)
What do the grades mean for the modified oxford scale?
Grade 0 - No detectable contraction
Grade 1 – Flicker
Grade 2 – Weak contraction
Grade 3 – Moderate contraction
Grade 4 – Good contraction
Grade 5 – Strong contraction against maximal resistance
Lifestyle treatment for pelvis floor dysfunction?
Healthy BMI
Avoid constipation
Smoking cessation
Avoid heavy lifting
Caffeine reduction
What is biofeedback training?
Biofeedback is a tool used for pelvic floor rehabilitation. This technique involves placing a small device in your bottom while doing the exercises.
This device provides visual and auditory stimuli, providing you with feedback as to how well you are doing the exercises.
