Physiology of the SI and the Exocrine Pancreas Flashcards
What is the small intestine a major site of?
Absorption and digestion
3 parts of the SI?
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
What does SI receive from stomach? via what sphinter?
Chyme via pyloric sphincter
What does SI receive from pancreas?
Pancreatic juice
What does SI receive from GB and Liver? Via what sphincter?
Bile
Via sphincter of Oddi
What does SI secrete?
Intestinal juice
What does Motility in SI cause?
- Segmentation
- Peristalsis
- Migrating motor complex
What is segmentation?
Mixing of chyme with digestive juice
What is peristalsis?
Slow repulsion of chyme aborally
What is removal of undigested residues to large intestine via ileo-caecal valve?
Migrating motor complex
Adaptions of SI for absorption?
SA increased by circular folds, villi, microvilli
Segmentation summary?
- Chopping moves chyme back and forth after meals
- Alternating contraction & relaxation of segments of circular muscle
- Strength of segmentation is enhanced by parasympathetic activity
What is MMC?
Migrating Motor complex
What does MMC do?
Occurs between meals
-Strong peristaltic contraction slowly passing length of intestine, clears small intestine of debris mucous and sloughed epithelial cells between meals
What is peristalsis inhibited by?
Eating and vagal activity.
Triggered by motilin
