Physiology and Homeostasis Flashcards
Anatomy definition?
The study of the structure of the body
Physiology definition?
The study of how the anatomical structures work together (functions)
- Considers the way living organisms perform vital activities
Levels of Structure and Function? (smallest to largest)
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a constant environment in the body
- Keeps internal conditions stable
Body cells work best if they have the correct…
Temperature, water level, glucose concentration
Internal definition
Inside the body
Environment definition
Surroundings of the body
Describe the mechanisms to keep cells in a constant environment?
Sensor: Senses disruptions in homeostasis
Control centre: Regulates body’s response to disruptions in homeostasis
Effecter: Acts to restore homeostasis
Explain homeostatic balance
Body maintains a stable internal environment although external environment changing
What is positive feedback?
Occurs when hormone secretion triggers more hormone secretions which moves away form homeostasis (an exaggeration) , few examples
- Child birth, cut
What is negative feedback?
Works to restore homeostasis by correcting a deficit within the system, stopping something before it gets worse (back to normal)
- Sweating, shivering
Compare positive and negative feedback
Positive:
- Leads to increasing instability, amplifies physiological process (intensifies)
Negative:
- Generally leads to stability in the system, slows down, reverse, shut off physiological process (return to normal)
Moderate homeostasis imbalance?
Disease and disorder
