Physiology Flashcards
What is the principle of fiber recruitement?
Principle stating that motor units are recruited in order according to their recruitement threshholds and firing rates.
Fibers with a high level of liability are recruited first and that those with lower levels of liability are recruited last. In other words, motor units will be recruited in order from smallest and slowest firing rate to largest and fastest firing rate.
What is the sliding filament theory?
The interaction of action actin and myosin that describes the process of muscle contraction.
What is the all-or-none principle?
The principle stating the strength of a neural electrical signal is independent of the magnitude of the stimulus so long as the neural threshhold is achieved.
What is a Type 1 muscle fiber?
Slow-twitch, fatigue resistant muscle fibers with high mitochondrial density; ideal for endurance and low-density activities of longer duration.
What is a Type II muscle fiber?
Fast-twitch, fast-fatigable muscle fibers with low mitochondrial density; recruited for high-intensity activities requiring strength and power.
