Describe Atavism
The belief that criminals are born criminal and can be identified by their features. This theory also describes them as primitive beings.

Describe the somatotype theory.
This theory describes criminals as physically different from non criminals. Certain body types or ‘somatotypes’ are linked to criminal behaviour. There are three body category’s; endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph.
What characteristics do endomorphs have? What is their personality like?
Rounded soft and lacking muscle or tone. Personality is sociable, relaxed and outgoing.
What characteristics do ectomorphs have? What is their personality like?
Thin fragile lacking both muscle and fat. Personality is self- conscious, fragile and thoughtful.
What characteristics do mesomorphs have? What is their personality like?
Muscular and hard bodied, little fat and strong limbs. Their personality is ambitious, assertive and sensation seeking.

Mesomorph is most likely to commit crime as they are attracted to risk taking and their physique is an important asset in committing a crime.
