physiological measurements Flashcards
what are the first 4 steps for taking blood pressure
With the cuff on your bare arm
sit in an upright position with back supported
feet flat on the floor
your arm supported at heart level
make sure the bottom of the cuff is directly above the bend of the elbow
relax for about five minutes before taking a measurement
how do you test for blood glucose (4)
insert a test strip into your meter
prick the side of your fingertip with the needle (lancet)
touch and hold the edge of the test strip to the drop of blood
the meter will display your blood sugar level on a screen after a few seconds.
how do you check someones pulse? (2)
place your index and middle fingers on their wrist, at the base of their thumb
using a clock or watch that counts seconds count how many beats you feel in a minute or count them over 30 seconds and multiply the number by 2 to work how many beats a minute.
what is used to test oxygen saturation?
A pulse oximeter can also measure blood oxygen saturation levels
through a small clip that’s usually placed on your finger or toe.
An oximeter reading only indicates what percentage of your blood is saturated with oxygen, known as the SpO2 level, as well as your heart rate.
what is a peak flow test?
peak flow is a simple measurement of how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs. it’s often used to help diagnose and monitor asthma.
a peak flow test involves blowing as hard as you can into a small handheld device called a peak flow meter.
how do you calculate the respiratory rate?
the rate is usually measured when a person is at rest and simply involves counting the number of breaths for one minute by counting how many times the chest rises.
respiration rates may increase with fever, illness, and other medical conditions.
in oxygen saturation what is the ideal oxygen level and heart rate?
an ideal blood oxygen level is between 95% and 100%.
an ideal heart rate is between 50 and 90 beats per minute
