Physio - Nervous System Flashcards
Describe the parts of a neuron
- Cell body - contains the nucleus
- Dendrites - structures that connect the cell body to other neurons to receive signals
- Axon - the tail of the neuron that is covered in an insulating sheath, transmitting signals
- Axon terminals
- Synapses - structures that convert electrical impulses into chemical signals and vise versa
What are the 5 types of sensory neurons
Photoreceptor
Thermoreceptor
Chemoreceptor
Nociceptor
Mechanoreceptor
What makes up the CNS
Brain and spinal cord
What makes up the peripheral nervous system
The nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to all the body
Classes of neurons
Motor
Sensory
Interneurons
Sensory neurons
Gets info about their environment to bring to the CNS
Motor neurons
Get info from other neurons and send commands to organs
Interneurons
Found in the CNS, it connects neurons to other neurons to transmit info
Afferent neurons
Carries info from sensory to CNS
Affect - to influence
Efferent neurons
Carries info from CNS to motor
Effect - to be changed
Sensory division
Brings info from PNS (sensory) to CNS
Motor division
Brings info from CNS to PNS (motors)
Somatic system
Contains motor and sensory neurons
Involved in conscious activities
Autonomic system
Neurons that connect the CNS to the internal organs
Involved in unconscious activities
Automatic

What are the subdivisions of the autonomic system
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic system
Fight of flight
To elevate a response to a stimulus
Parasympathetic system
Relax and digest
To reduce a response down to a normal value
Which branch of the nervous system consists of autonomic and somatic subdivisions
