Physics- Topic 2/ Motion and Forces- spec 2 Flashcards
Velocity time graphs: diagonal line
Object is moving at a constant acceleration
Velocity time graphs: horizontal line
Object is moving at a constant velocity
Velocity time graphs: Steeper diagonal
Larger constant acceleration
Velocity time graphs: Diagonal line downwards
The object is constantly decelerating
Velocity time graphs: Diagonal line in negative axis
The object is moving backwards at a constant acceleration/ it changes direction
Velocity time graphs: Displacement covered
Area underneath the shapes
Velocity time graphs: Acceleration
The gradient
Velocity time graphs: Horizontal line on the x axis
Object is moving at zero velocity and is therefore stationary
1) How to determine the speed of something
Mesure a certain distance with a tape measure 3 times in order to avoid miscalculations. Use a stopwatch to time how long an object takes to travel from point a-b. Repeat this
2) How to determine the speed of something: Line gates
Two horseshoe shaped sensors are attached to a computer. A narrow beam of infrared is emitted from one end of the horseshoe to the end of the horseshoe, this happens for both censors. Once an object crosses the infrared line (the receiver), it triggers the timer to begin. Once the object passes the second receiver it triggers the timer to stop. This distance between the two magnets is previously calculated and logged onto the computer, the data logger which calculates the speed.
