Physics Quiz Flashcards
Crest (Property of Transverse Waves)
The highest point on the wave
Trough (Property of Transverse Waves)
The lowest point on the wave
Wavelength (Property of Transverse Waves)
The distance from crest to crest or from trough to trough
Amplitude (Property of Transverse Waves)
The height of the wave from the rest position to the crest, or from the rest position to the trough
Rest position - Equilibrium (Property of Transverse Waves)
The place where there is no wave
Light
Form of radiant energy
Frequency
The rate of repetition of a wave
Higher = more energy the wave passes along
Example of Frequency
What is the speed, if the wavelength is 10cm and the frequency is 5 cycles/sec?
5 cycles/sec x 10cm = 50cm/sec
Electromagnetic radiation
A wave pattern made of electric and magnetic fields that can travel through empty space.
-ranges from gamma rays (shortest) to radio waves (longest), called the electromagnetic spectrum
Luminous vs. Non luminous
Luminous: an object that gives off its own light (lightbulb, sun)
Non luminous: an object that does not produce its own light (tree, moon)
Incandescence
Light that is produced by an object that is at a very high temp (sun, lightbulb, fire)
Properties of light
- Transmitted
- Reflected
- Absorbed
Transparent
Clear
Translucent
Somewhat see-through
Opaque
Cannot see through; mirror
