Physics Part 1 STATIC ELECTRICITY Flashcards
physics
type of science relating to the nature and property of matter and energy
law of electric charges
same charges repel
opposite charges attract
charged objects attract neutral objects
Static electricity
the build-up of electric charges on the surface of a materials
electricity
the movement of tiny particles called atoms
electrostatic series
a list of arranged materials
electroscope
an instrument used to detect the presence of electric charges
pith ball and metal leaf
3 ways to charge an object
- friction
- contact
- induction
Induction
rearranges the position of electrons in a neutral object when a charged object to brought close to it
can be permanent or temporary
insulator
prevents teh movement of electrons
conductor
allows electrons to move freely through
semi-conductors
allows electrons to move fairly well through
grounding
discharging an object by connecting it to the Earth
passive discharge
charged object being discharged over time
humidity may discharge
discharge at a point
the shape of the conductor affects how quickly it will discharge
when it is pointed, the electrons get pushed off from the repeling forces of the other electrons
Lightning
- negative charge at the bottom
- lightning occurs when this charge returns to earth
- moves in path of least resistance
