Chemistry Part 1 MATTER Flashcards
What is Matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
Basic properties of matter
Volume - the amount of space that matter takes up
Mass - the amount of matter an object has
Shape: the state of matter (liquid, gas, solid)
States of Matter
Solid - have a fixed shape and volume
Liquids - have a fixed volume and takes the shape of the container
Gases - has no fixed volume always takes shape of the container
Physical Property
A property/characteristic of matter that is observed with our 5 senses
Quantitative vs Qualitative properties
both physical properties
quantitative: a numerical observation
qualitative: an observation made with our 5 senses
Chemical property
the behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance
- reactivity w/ acid
- reactivity w/ oxygen (combustibility and flammable)
- reactivity w/ water
- reactivity to the exposure to oxygen in water/air, rust
Physical change
- substance still exists only has changed form (evaporation or the way it looks, dissolving)
- reversible
- a solution is a physical change
Chemical change
- a new substance produced
- irreversible
- precipitate form, bubbles or gas produced, change in color, change in odor, change in energy, heat or light production
Particle theory
- All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms
- All particles of one substance are the same vice versa
- There are spaces between the particles
- The particles are always moving, more energy = faster
- There are attractive forces among paricles
Scientific Method
- Question/problem
- Research
- Hypothesis
- Experimental Design
- Observations
- Analyze
- Conclusion
hints that a chemical reactions has occured
light produced
heat produced
odour change
colour change
gas bubbles produced
precipitate formed?
Density
- a physical property
- mass per unit of volume
- steeper slope = higher density
Pure substance
- only 1 type of particle
- all pure substance have the same properties
- components cannot be separated by physical means
element
- one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
- in an element the molecules are made of the same atoms
Compound
- Two or more diff elements
- can be broken down into simpler substances
