PHYSICS P7: MAGNETISM Flashcards
what does every magnet do?
it creates a magnetic field around itself
what are magnetic forces caused by?
magnetic forces are caused by the invisible magnetic fields
where is the magnetic field strongest?
it is strongest at the magnet’s poles
what happens when two magnetic fields overlap?
the fields cause the magnets to push or pull each other
what do the arrows on a magnetic field line show?
they show the direction of a magnetic field. the arrows always point from the magnet’s north pole, to it’s south
is the earth’s core magnetic?
yes. can be seen due to the magnetic compasses’ arrow pointing in the direction of earth’s magnetic field
what does magnetism describe?
the ability for magnets to attract (pull towards) or repel (push away) without touching). this is an example of a non-contact force
what happens when two magnet’s north and South Pole are close enough?
they will both attract to each other
if two magnet’s south poles are close what happens? (applies to both north aswell)
they will repel instead of attract to each other
what pure metals can be turned to magnets?
iron, nickel, and cobalt. they are all magnetic materials
what are induced magnets?
magnetic materials that become magnets when they enter a magnetic field. when moved away, the will no longer be magnets
what do any electric currents produce?
any electric current produces a magnetic field around itself
what does the strength depend on?
it depends on the current’s size and the distance from the wire
RIGHT HAND GRIP
(just show answer for key concept)
-grip wire with right hand, with thumb pointing in current’s direction
-curl fingers around the wire to point the direction of the magnetic field
what is a solenoid?
a loop of wire collected into a cylindrical shape
what is the magnetic field like in a solenoid?
sting and uniform - it has the same strength at every point
what can the magnetic fields in and around a coil of a wire be like?
they are parallel to one another and are similar to those of a bar magnet
