PHYSICS P6: WAVES Flashcards
what does a transverse wave do to the medium’s particles to do?
they are made to vibrate at a right angle in the direction of the wave’s motion
what type of wave makes a medium’s particles vibrate at a right angle in the direction of the wave’s motion?
a transverse wave
when a transverse wave has passed what position do the particles end up in?
particles end up in the same position
how are particles made to stay in the same position?
when a transverse wave passes through
what is an example of transverse waves?
a cork in water or the coils of a spring
they both move up and down as the wave passes
a cork in water and coils of a spring are examples of what waves?
transverse waves
when a longitudinal wave passes what happens to the medium’s particles?
all of the particles are made to vibrate in the same direction as the wave’s motion
what wave makes a medium’s particles vibrate in the same direction when it passes?
longitudinal waves
what are examples of longitudinal waves?
sound waves and pushing a spring in and out
sound waves and pushing a spring in and out are examples of what wave?
a longitudinal wave
what happens when a spring is pushed in and out?
when a spring is compressed and extended, longitudinal waves are created
what do both waves transfer?
not matter and energy are transferred from the two waves
what do electromagnetic waves transfer?
they transfer energy from the source of the wave to the absorber of the wave
what do all electromagnetic waves do in a vacuum?
all of the EM waves travel at the same speed/velocity
what are the seven types of EM waves?
(lowest to highest frequency)
- radio waves
- microwaves
- infra-red radiation
- visible
- ultraviolet (UV)
- X-Rays
- gamma rays
what of the seven waves has the shorted wavelength, and highest frequency?
gamma rays
what of the seven waves has the longest wavelength, but the shortest frequency?
radio waves
how can electromagnetic waves be produced?
a change in atoms or nuclei can produce an electromagnetic wave
out of all EM waves on the spectrum, which carries the most energy?
gamma rays carry the most amount of energy
RIPPLE TANK REQUIRED PRACTICAL:
-in a shallow tray of water place a vibrating bar connected to a power pack
-place a sheet of paper underneath the tank, and shine a light from above
-place a ruler next to the sheet of paper and freeze the image of the wave to find the wavelength
-place a timer next to the paper and count how many waves pass a point to find the frequency. divide it by 10
-to find wave speed use the equation
wave speed = frequency x wavelength
