Physics chapter 2 Flashcards
Definition of speed
Distance travelled by an object per unit of time
Definition of velocity
Speed of an object in a given direction
Definition of Acceleration
rate of change in velocity per unit of time
Properties of velocity
- It tells the direction of object
- It has a vector quantity
- It can be both positive and negative
Properties of speed
- It tells the speed of and object
- It is a scalar quantity
- Speed is always positive
Formula for speed
Distance/time
Definition of distance
The total path covered by the body and displacement
Definition of displacement
The shortest path covered by the body
Difference of Distance and Displacement
- Distance is a scalar quantity while Displacement is a vector quantity
- Distance is total path covered while displacement is the shortest path covered
- Distance can never be zero but displacement can
- Distance can never be negative while Displacement can be both positive and negative
- Distance doesn’t decrease with time whereas displacement decreases
- Distance is always equal or greater than the displacement
Formula for accelaration
Final velocity - Initial velocity / Time
How to find speed in a distance-time graph
Change in distance / Change in time
How to find Acceleration in speed-time graph
Change in velocity / Change in time
Acceleration is the ——— travelled by an object per unit of time
