Physics - Chap 12 Flashcards
Biomass
Organic material made up of plant and animal waste
Efficiency
Ratio of the useful energy that comes out of a device to the total energy that went in
EnerGuide
Label that states how much energy an appliance will use in a month or year of average use
Energy grid
Web of interconnections between generating stations, substations, and users; also called a distribution grid
Energy star
Symbol identifying the most efficient appliances in each class
Fossil fuels
Fuel formed from the organic matter of organisms that lived millions of years ago; includes coal, oil, and natural gas
Geothermal energy
Energy from water naturally heated by hot rock in earths crust
Hydroelectricity
Electricity generated by harnessing the power of falling water
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
Commonly used unit of electrical energy, equal to a consumption of one kilowatt in one hour
Non-renewable energy sources
Resource that cannot be replaced once it is used up, such as coal or oil
Renewable energy sources
Resource that can be reused or replaced such as sunlight and wind
Thermoelectric generating plant
Electricity generating plant that uses a fuel such as coal or biomass to heat water to create high pressure steam
Thermonuclear
Electrical energy produced by heat in nuclear power stations
Turbine
Machine that uses the flow of a fluid to turn a shaft; used in generators to generate electricity
Generator
Device that transforms the energy of motion into an electric current
