Physics - Chap 10 Flashcards
Charging by contact
Charging process in which electrons transfer from the charged object to the neutral object that it touches
Conduction
Movement or transmission of electric charges through a substance
Induction
Movement of electrons within a substance, caused by a nearby charged object, without direct contact between the substance & object
Conductivity
Ability of materials to allow electrons to move freely in them
Conductor
Material that allows objects to change positions
Electric charge
Charged particles that exert an electric force on each other
Electrical discharge
Rapid transfer of electric charges
Electron affinity
Tendency of a substance to hold on to electrons
Electroscope
Instrument that can detect static charge
Electrostatics
Study of static electric charges
Electron
Negatively charged particles in an atom; outside nucleus
Proton
Positively charged particles in an atom; inside nucleus
Neutron
Particle that has no electric charge, therefore neutral; inside nucleus
Nucleus
Centre of the atom; contains protons & neutrons
Friction
Force resisting the relative notion of 2 surfaces in contact
Grounding
Process of connecting a charged object to earths surface
Insulator
Solid, liquid, or gas that resists or blocks the movement of electrons
Law of attraction
Particles with opposite charges attract each other
Law of repulsion
Particles with like charges repel each other
Lightning rod
Metal pole with a wire attached to it that runs down to the ground with the purpose of allowing electrons that build up on a building to spread out into the air
Static charge/static electricity
Electric charge that builds up on the surface of an object
