Physics Flashcards
Newtons first law
rest (motion) stays at rest (motion) unless acted on by outside force. Have constant velocity
Newtons second law
F=MA, net force changes velocity
Newtons third law
every action has a equal and opposite reaction
Energy
ability to do work
Work
energy transferred by force
Conservative forces
work done by force depends on final position… path independent (includes gravity and spring)
Power
Rate that work is done (P=W/t)
Vector
magnitude and direction
Scalar
only magnitude
instantaneous
at a certain moment in time
instantaneous velocity
speed and direction at a moment, slope on distance vs. time graph
VT graph
area= distance, slope= acceleration
What is the speed of sound based on
stiffness and density, V solids> liquids> gas
Ohms Law
V=IR
Resistors in series
I1=I2, Vtotal= V1 + V2, Rtot= R1 +R2
Resistors in parallel
I= I1 + I2, 1/R tot= 1/R1 + 1/R2, V1=V2= V3
What affects resistance
R= rho (L/A) where Rho= resistivity, R decreases as area increases and length decreases
Ammeter
measures current, must be in series and have low resistance
voltmeter
hook up in parallel, use high resistance
Capacitor
stores charges and electrical potential energy
Capacitor in series
Q1= Q2, 1/Ceq= 1/C1 + 1/C2, V/Q=1/Ceq
Capacitor in parallel
Ceq= C1+ C2… Vtot=V1 +V2
What affects capacitance
dielectric increases capacitance. (Decrease voltage between plates) C’=kC
Potential difference
PE= Ue=qv, V= kQ/r
