Where are sedimentary rocks located in the UK?
Lowland areas of southern and central parts of England.
Where are Igneous rocks located in the UK?
Igneous rocks can be found mainly in upland areas in Scotland, in the Lake District in North West England and Snowdonia in North Wales and Northern Ireland.
Where are metamorphic rocks located in the UK?
Metamorphic rocks are found in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
What are sedimentary rocks?
Formed on the surface of the earth by layers of sediments pressing together. They are formed where oceans, lakes or other bodies of water once existed.
What are metamorphic rocks?
They transform from other types of rocks by extreme heat and pressure. They are formed deep within the earth.
What are igneous rocks?
Formed by melted rock that has cooled and solidified. Formed by the magma in volcanoes cooling inside the earth.
Characterists of SEDIMENTARY rocks
- Layered
- Soft looking
- Contain fossils
Characteristics of igneous rocks
- shiny/ glossy
- contain small or large crystals
Characteristics of metamorphic rocks
- hard
- often contain crystals
