PHYSICAL: Impact of weather and climate Flashcards
Impact of weather- INCREASING FREQUENCY OF STORMS
More periods of heavy, intense rainfall means more water flowing in to rivers, which then overflow increasing flood risk
Impact of weather- DROUGHT
Bakes the upper soil so when it does rain the water runs off the surface, it cant soak in so it reaches rivers quickly via surface run-off and rapidly increases discharge.
Impact of weather- COLD CONDITIONS
Soil becomes imperable, snowmelt cannot infiltrate and flows rapidly in to river, increasing flood risk
Impact of climate- EROSION RATE
Increases with greater discharge. in wet climates more material is eroded, widening and deepening river channels as well as increasing the sediment load.
Impact of climate- WEATHERING
Freeze thaw weathering increases in areas where temperatures around are freezing
Impact of climate- DISCHARGE
Wetter climates mean greater discharge. hotter temps mean greater evaporation so less discharge. GREATER DISCHARGE = GREATER VELOCITY
