Physical skills Flashcards
What is posture?
The way the body is held
Why is posture important?
-Keeps bones and joints in correct alignment
-Muscles are being used properly
Helps decrease the wearing of joint surfaces
-Makes the body look better & movement more aesthetically pleasing
What is alignment and why is it important?
Correct placement of body parts in relation to each other
-Helps decrease the wearing of joint surfaces
-Prevents muscular pain & injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones
-Makes the body look better & movement more aesthetically pleasing
What is balance and why is it important?
A steady or held position achieved by an even distribution of weight
-Required so dancers can remain stable and steady whilst holding stationary positions.
-To ensure dancers can perform complex movement for example upper body tilts whilst standing in retiré
What is co-ordination and why is it important?
The ability to efficiently move several body parts at once
-To perform complex dance phrases with precision at varying speeds
-To perform a range of fast, complex gestures, using the arms and legs simultaneously with accuracy
What is control and why is it important?
The ability to efficiently move several body parts at once
-To perform complex dance phrases with precision at varying speeds
-To perform a range of fast, complex gestures, using the arms and legs simultaneously with accuracy
What is flexibility and why is it important?
The range of movement in a joint
-To give dancers a full range of movement. To also ensure they can perform complex choreography in a range of different styles
-To prevent muscular injury and pain
What is mobility and why is it important?
The range of movement in a joint; the ability to move fluently from action to action
-Dancers need mobility to perform challenging movements with ease
Prevents injury to the muscles and joint
-Makes choreography appear more seamless and it can also help increase a dancer’s turn out.
What is strength and why is it important?
Muscular power
-To perform complex movements such as leaps, floorwork. A lack of strength may cause an injury To enable a dancer to perform lifts when working with a partner
What is stamina and why is it important?
The ability to maintain physical and mental energy over periods of time
-To be able to perform a full routine maintaining accuracy and precision throughout
-Increases oxygen
supply to muscles, efficient functioning reduces the risk of fatigue, enhances concentration,
-boosts the immune system and reduces the risk of injury
What is extension and why is it important?
Lengthening of muscles or limbs
-Creates an elongated, extended clean line on the body, which is aesthetically pleasing for the audience.
-Makes movement appear much more clear, precise and articulate
What is isolation and why is it important?
An independent movement of part of the body
-To be able to perform isolated, gestural movements at varying speeds with accuracy & precision
