Physical, Sensory, and Perceptual Development in Infancy Flashcards
Brain structures are composed of 2 basic types of cells
neurons and glial cells
Who has denser dendrites and synapses- adult or child?
Who’s brain is more efficient?
The infant has denser dendrites but the adult’s brain is more efficient
Cephalocaudal
Cephalocaudal development, or the cephalocaudal principle or trend, is a term used to describe the universal “head-to-toe” direction of human development. Kids can control their head before they can roll over
The proximodistal principle
states that development proceeds from the center of the body outward.
Dynamic systems theory
the notion that several factors interact to influence development
Wayne Dennis
Found that babies who practice skills can do them better (Iranian orphans sitting up)
Macronutrient malnutrition
- diet that contains too few calories
Marasmus
- calorie deficit is severe, they can suffer from a permanant neurological disease most also suffer from parasitic infections that lead to chronic diarrhea. This makes it very difficult to treat it by increasing the infant’s intake of calories. However, with a program of dietary supplemtation with formula combined with intravenous feedings and treatment for parasites can reverse marasmus
Kwashiorkor
Diet contains almost enough calories but not enough protein. Can lead to permanent brain damage
Effects of calorie and protein deficiencies on development
intellectual disablilities, may be fatal
effects of defeciencies in micronutrients on development
may develop anemia
