Cognitive Development in Infancy Flashcards
primary circular reaction
repetitive simple actions that the infant does to their own body (like accidentally sucks their thumb one day, and it feels nice so they repeat that action)
secondary circular reaction
Repetitive action to trigger a reaction outside of the person’s body (like baby coos, and mom smiles, so baby coos again)
Tertiary circular reactions:
Baby doesn’t repeat the behaivor, but tries variations of it to see what responses they get. Babies begin to experiment (ie: dropping things to see if they land it diff places/make different sounds)
Deferred imitation
Babies can imitate an action a while after they see it
Object concept
Infant understanding of what objects are and how they behave
Schematic learning
Organizing of experiences into expectancies, or “known combinations
Intonational Pattern
“tune” of speech, the ups and downs in it
Holophrases
Word and gesture combination
