Q

Fifty grams of carbon disulfide can be broken down into 42.1 grams of sulfur and 7.9 grams of carbon. Is carbon disulfide made up of atoms or molecules?

A

Carbon disulfide is made up of molecules. Since it can be broken down into smaller components, it must be made of molecules. If it were made of atoms it could not be broken down into smaller units.

Q

If you put iron near a magnet, the iron will be attracted to the magnet. Rust is made up of molecules that contain iron and oxygen atoms. Rust is not attracted to a magnet. If rust contains iron atoms, and iron is attracted to a magnet, why isn’t rust attracted to a magnet?

A

Because when an atom is a part of a molecule, the molecule does not take on the characteristics of an atom. Instead the atoms in the molecule join together in such a way as to give the molecule its own characteristic.

Q

A statue is made out of copper and displayed outside. After many years, what color will the statue be?

A

The statue will eventually turn a shade of green. This comes from the copper atoms reacting with carbon dioxide in the air the make copper hydroxycarbonate

Q

How many centimeters are in 1.3 meter?

A

Since we want to convert from meters to centimeters, we need to remember that centi means 0.01. So 1 centimeter is the same thing as 0.01 meters. Thus: 1 cm = 0.01 m. Next we write measurement as a fraction: 1.3m/1. Now we can use our conversion relationship. Since we want to end up with cm at the end, we must multiply the measurement by a fraction that has meters on the bottom (to cancel the meter unit that is there) and cm on the top (so that cm is the unit that we are left with.) remember the numbers next to the unit in relationship above go with the units. Thus since m goes on the bottom of the fraction, so does 0.01. Since cm goes on the top, so does 1.

1.3/1 X 1 cm/0.01m = 130 cm
