Physical Properties of Matter Flashcards
Physical Properties
characteristics which can be observed without producing a new substance
Solubility
ability to dissolve (physical)
Brittleness
ability to shatter when struck (physical)
Luster
Shine (physical)
Magnetism
ability to be attracted to a magnet (physical)
Malleability
ability to be hammered into a sheet and not fall apart (ex foil) - (physical)
Ductility
ability to be drawn into a wire (physical)
Conductivity
ability to carry a current or heat (physical)
Tenacity
ability to resist being pulled apart (physical)
Sublimation
can change from a solid to a gas without melting at certain temps
Boiling Point
temperature at which liquid turns into a gas (physical)
Melting Point
temperature at which solid turns into a liquid
Chemical Properties
characteristics which describe how a substance reacts and fails to react with other substances
Physical Change
a change in the appearance but NOT in major properties or composition (ex. sublimation, condensation, freezing)
Chemical Change
a change in which one or more substances form with totally new properties and compounds (ex. burning, digestion, rusting/corrosion (oxidized), decaying)
