Matter and Energy Flashcards
Matter
anything that takes up space and has mass
Solid Phase
- orderly arrangement
- particles are. in fixed positions
- tightly packed; crystalline,
- particles vibrate; slight movement;
- definite volume; definite shape
Liquid Phase
- some disorder
- particles are free to move relative to each other
- move faster
- definite volume; no definite shape/indefinite/negligible
Gas Phase
- total disorder - entropy;
- much empty space
- particles have complete freedom of motion/move fastest
- particles are far apart; ‘
- no definite volume or definite shape
Phase Changes
changes in temp and or pressure result in changes of phases
temparature
affect how fast particles move
Pressure
affects how packed the particles are
Endothermic
process that requires absorption of heat
Exothermic
process that involves the release of heat
Melting
solid to a liquid; endothermic change (absorption of heat)
Vaporization/Evaporation
liquid to gas; endothermic (absorption of heat)
Sublimation
solid to gas; skips liquid phase; endothermic (heat is absorbed ); ex. dry ice + iodide
Condensation
gas to liquid; exothermic (release of heat)
Freezing
liquid to solid; exothermic (release of heat)
Deposition
gas to solid; exothermic (release of heat)
