Q

Why are soccer balls round?

A

At the end of a long history, the balls used for soccer and almost every ball sport is round because the regular shape produces regular performance– smooth rolling, straight, straight flying, and predictable bounce. The ancient Egyptians knew this, and so did the Greeks and Romans. Modern technology makes it possible to have roundness at the same tune as the right weight, size, and bounce to suit any sport. And now that we have complete predictability, every pitcher, kicker, batter, and bowler is working hard to induce spin and curve to fool the opposition.

Q

Where was wrestling invented?

A

Wrestling as a form of unarmed combat seems to have arisen in all cultures and in all ages, but various modern forms of amateur wrestling can trace their ancestry back through European styles in the Greeks and Romans. American collegiate wrestling and its younger brother, scholastic wrestling, have strong ties with “catch-as-catch-can” which became popular in the northwest of England in the 18th century.
