Q

When was the Renaissance?

A

Though it was coined long after its era, it does represent some definable themes. Rational enquiry, based on classical principles, led to challenging discoveries that were facilitated and enhanced by new technologies, The consequences were fundamental changes in art, culture, trade, and politics. As a result, it is possible to argue that the renaissance laid the foundation for much that the modern world takes for granted.

Q

Who took the first photograph?

A

The name Joseph Niepce is largely unknown today, but his place in the creation of the modern world deserves to be better appreciated. From his breakthrough we can trace the developments in image capture and storage that are taken for granted today. Left in obscurity until 1952, the first photograph was rediscovered by a historian of photography, Helmut Gernsheim. It is now on display at the University of Texas.

Q

Why dud Van Gogh cut off his ear?

A

Increasingly depressed and largely unsuccessful as an artist, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself on July 27, 1890, dying two days later. His art was to become recognized and cherished around the world. As for the incident with his ear and the razor, many theories have been put forward, but two weeks after the event Van Gogh described it in a letter to his brother Theo as “simply an artist’s fit” perhaps that should be explanation enough.

What is Pop Art?

A

Pop art is fused with popular culture, the images and ideas that surround us in a modern society. It breaks down the divide between commercial art and fine art, and challenges concepts about what art is and what art is for. As a movement, pop art drew inspiration from advertising, television, popular music, cinema, and magazines, but it influenced then in turn. The techniques used in pop at have gone on to change the way in which images are presented in the modern world.
