what is assessed in a vaginal examination?
assess cervical dilation, cervical effacement, fetal membrane status, presentation, position, station, degree of fetal head flexion, fetal skull swelling or molding
Once fetal membranes have broken (water break/rupture), what is the main focus?
finding Fetal Heart Rate (FHR).
how it the pH tested from amniotic fluid from water breaking?
sample fluid is taken and tested with nitrazine paper
- positive turns blue
- negative turns yellow
false positives can occur if mother is bleeding
when do you know if there is an infection from amniotic fluid?
Cloudy foul smelling amniotic fluid
what does it indicate if the amniotic fluid is green?
fetus passed meconium
how is Uterine contractionl monitoring done?
Done by either Palpation, External fetal monitoring (tocodynamometer), or internal monitoring (intrauterine pressure catheter). Assessing for frequency, duration, intensity, uterine resting tone.
when is continuous internal monitoring done?
Used for women at high risk of poor LND
what are common activities that indigenous people in L&D?
Smudging, drumming, singing, and bathing are some things that can be part of labor and birth
what is cedar?
an important aspect of indigenous health and cleansing. Washing the baby in cedar
what are the placenta ceremonies and rituals?
Placenta is considered to be important and will be kept to dry out and hung above a crib (not sure which tribe or clan) giving a baby and others a sense of where they come from
what are the options for delivery?
Vaginal delivery
