Physical assessment Flashcards
1
Q
Explain how gestational age is assessed
A
- an accurate history and LNMP
- an early dating scan
- serial growth scans
- a Ballard score post birth including physical and neuromuscular examinations
- growth charts are not accurate in determining the age of a baby by their weight, just whether their weight gain is constant
2
Q
Describe the revised Ballard System of assessment of the newborn
A
The physical assessment assesses skin, lanugo, plantar surface, breast, eye/ear, and genitals, with a higher score correlating to a higher gestational age
The neurological assessment assesses posture, square window, arm recoil, popliteal angle, scarf sign, and heel to ear, with a higher score correlating to higher gestational age
3
Q
Explain the importance of undertaking a physical assessment and ballard scoring
A
- Allows MDT to provide GA accurate and appropriate care to the infant
- Allows us to track their growth and development appropriately
4
Q
Explain how GA can be determined using physical maturity
A
5
Q
Explain how GA can be determined using neurological markers
A
6
Q
Identify challenges in determining GA
A
- unclear history or irregular period
- lack of antenatal care
