Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Flashcards
What are the CSEP 24 hour Movement Guidelines for 5-17 year-olds
Sweat: accumulation of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity involving a variety of aerobic activities.
3 days/ week of vigorous intensity
3 days/week of bone and muscle strengthening
Step: several hours of a variety of structured and unstructured light physical activities
Sleep: uninterrupted 9-11 hours of sleep per night for those aged 5-13 years and 8-10 hours per night for those aged 14-17 with consistent bed and wake up times.
Sedentary behaviour: No more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time: limited sitting for extended periods
What is the general population definition of sedentary behavior?
Any waking behavior characterized by an energy expenditure <=1.5 metabolic equivalent tasks (METs), while in a sitting, reclining or lying posture
What is the sedentary behavior definition in Infants?
Any waking behavior characterized by low energy expenditure while restrained or when sedate
**time spent in prone position aka tummy time is not considered a sedentary exposure
Define sedentary behaviour pattern.
The manner in which sedentary behavior is accumulated throughout the day or week while awake
Define Physical inactivity
An insufficient physical activity level to meet present physical activity recommendation
Define Sitting.
A position in which one’s weight is supported by one’s buttocks rather than one’s feet, and in which one’s back is upright
Define Lying.
Being in a horizontal position on a supporting surface
Define Standing
A position in which one has or is maintaining an upright position while supported by one’s feet.
Passive: less than 2 METs
Active: anything greater than 2 METs
Define Stationary behaviour
Any waking behavior done while lying, reclining, sitting, or standing, with no ambulation, irrespective of energy expenditure
Define screen time.
Screen time refers to the time spent on screen-based behaviors. These behaviors can be performed while being sedentary or physically active
Define non-screen-based sedentary time
Time spent in sedentary behaviors that do not involve the use of screens
What are some benefits of 60 minutes of MVPA and <2 hours of screen time?
Improve overall health
Improve school performance
Improve self-esteem and confidence
Maintain a healthy body weight
Improve fitness
Grow stronger
Have fun playing with friends
Feel happier
Learn new skills
What are some consequences of sedentary behavior?
Sedentary behavior linked to all-cause & CVD mortality, regardless of physical activity
Watching TV positively associated with unfavorable body comp, decreased fitness, decreased self-esteem and decreased academic achievement.
What is more screen time associated with?
Reduction of available time for PA
Reduced metabolic rate
Increased energy intake
Influence of media ads promoting unhealthy food and drinks
Consuming unhealthy snacks
Increase risk of metabolic syndrome
Interference with normal sleep patterns
