phys Flashcards
what are the 8 energy stores?
kinetic, magnetic, thermal, chemical, elastic potential, nuclear, gravitational potential and electrostatic
what are the 4 ways heating can be transferred?
heating (conduction and convection), mechanical work (forces and mechanical waves eg sound), electrical work (electrical circuits) and radiation (light, gamma, x-rays, uv etc)
what is the equation for work done?
work done = force x distance
what is useful energy?
energy thats transferred to where we want it and how we want it
what is wasted energy?
energy that is not useful, that doesn’t go where or how we want it to
what direction does thermal energy travel in?
hot to cold
what are the 3 ways thermal energy can be transferred?
conduction (solids), convection (liquids) and radiation (vacuum)
what are the 6 different ways to heat/insulate buildings?
loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, aluminium foil, double glazed windows, thicker bricks and solar panels
what does it mean if something is non-renewable?
its a finite resource. it can’t be recreated or reused.
what does it mean if something is renewable?
its energy derived from natural resources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed.
what are 10 types of energy resources?
geothermal, solar, wind, wave, tidal, hydroelectric, coal, nuclear, oil and biomass
what is the kinetic theory?
the kinetic theory explains the movement and arrangement of particles/atoms in a substance such as solids, liquids and gases
what is latent heat?
the energy transferred when a substance changes its state
what is specific latent heat?
the energy transferred per kilogram when a substance changes its state
what is the word equation for kinetic energy?
kinetic energy = 0.5 x mass x speed^2
