Phyisology of reproduction in the female Flashcards
Describe the role of FSH
acts on the sertoli cells of the testes to stimulate sperm production (spermatogenesis)
Describe the actions of LH
Causes ovulation
Stimulates the remnants of the burst follicle to form a corpus luteum
Describe the corpus leteum and its function
Produces the hormone progesterone, which stimulates the uterus to thicken even more in preparation for implantation of a fertilized egg
Briefly outline the processes of ovulation and fertilisation
Egg is released from the ovary which passes into the uterine tubes (fallopian tubes). During mating semen is deposited by the male into the upper vagina/lower cervix vice versa. Sperm are then passed from the site of ejaculation through the uterus and into the uterine tubes.
