Q

What does brown fat do ?

A

Activates right before you start to shiver.
Also helps to burn calories and stores energy.
Helps control blood sugar and insulin levels.

Q

How does brown fat produces heat ?

A

Produces heat by breaking down blood sugar (glucose) and fat molecules to help maintain body temperature.

Q

How do babies thermoregulate ?

A

Once a baby has left the womb body temperature drops.
Therefore they must accelerate heat production via non shivering thermogenesis.

Q

What is non shivering thermogenesis ?

A

Dependent on involuntary process activated by the sympathetic nervous system.
Is due largely to heat production in born adipose tissue.

Q

What is surfactant ?

A

Is a mixture of fat and proteins made in the lungs.
Coats alveoli.
Prevents it from sticking together when the baby exhales (breathes out ).

15
Q

Why is surfactant important ?

A

Premature infants maybe born before their lungs make enough surfactant.
Low amounts cause poor lung function.
Results in stiff, collapsed lungs increased fluid in lungs, making it difficult to breathe .

Q

What is fetal hemoglobin ?

A

Major hemoglobin in fetal red blood cells during gestation.
Fetal is composed of 2 chains A and Y chains.
By 6-12 it is completely replaced by adult hemoglobin.
Adult sis composed of 2 A and B chains

17
Q

What’s tissue compliance in infants ?

A

Young bones bend rather than break.
Young lungs, chest walls and cardiac muscles expand and contract easily.
Vessels dampen pressure variations and are supple.

18
Q

What’s polkilothermy in infants ?

A

Control of muscle
Behavioral capacity
