What are Phrases?
Units longer than individual words but smaller than sentences.
What is a Noun Phrase?
Any unit where the central element is a noun. (i.e.: I like [it]).
What do Pronouns replace?
Nouns and Noun Phrases.
Why do some Noun Phrases have only one word?
Because the noun can be expanded to form longer strings which are more clearly noun phrases.
What is a pre-Head String?
A string of elements that can be added before the Head of a phrase.
What is a post-Head String?
A string of elements that can be added after the Head of a phrase.
What are the characteristics of a Noun Phrase?
They have a noun as their head, and determiners and adjective phrases usually constitute the pre-Head string. If the head is a pronoun, the Noun Phrase may just have a head.
What are the characteristics of a Verb Phrase?
They have a verb as their head, and any pre-Head strings must be negative. Many Verb Phrases also have post-head strings.
What are Intransitive Verbs?
Verbs that are never followed by direct objects.
What are the characteristics of an Adjective Phrase?
They have an adjective as their head, their pre-Head strings are usually adverbs, and they can have post-Head strings. Some adjective Heads must be followed by post-Head strings.
What are the characteristics of an Adverb Phrase?
They have an adverb as their head, their pre-Head string is another adverb phrase, and they usually don’t have post-Head strings.
What are the characteristics of a Prepositional Phrase?
They have a preposition as their head, and they only have post-Head strings.
Can there be Phrases in Phrases?
Yes.
