Look out
Look out! There’s a car coming. = be careful
Take off
I was nervous as the plane took off. = went into the air
I’m going to take off my shoes/ take them off.
Break down
The car broke down. = the engine stopped working.
Get by
My French isn’t very good, but it’s enough to get by. = manage
Turn round
When I touched him on the shoulder, he turned round.
Keep up with
Your’e walking too fast. I can’t keep up with you.
Look up at
We looked up at the plane as it flew above us.

Are you looking forward to your holiday?
Fill in/ out
Could you fill in/ out this form/ fill it in/ out?
Check in
Announce one’s arrival, e.g. at hotels or airports
= sign in

Drop in/ call in
I dropped in to see bob on my way home. = visit somebody for a short time without arranging to do this.
Join in
We’re playing a game. Why don’t you join in? = taking part in an activity that is already going on.
Plug in
The fridge isn’t working because you haven’t plugged it in. = connect something to the electricity supply.
Take somebody in
I believed him as a policeman. I was completely taken in. = deceive somebody.
Eat out
There were nothing at home, so we decided to eat out. = eat at a restaurant, not at home.
Drop out
Bob went to university but dropped out after a year. = stop before you have completely finished a course/ race etc.
Get out of something
I don’t want to go, but I can’t get out of it now. = avoid doing it
Cut something out
I cut the beautiful picture out from the magazine and kept it.
Leave something out
You can leave out the word ‘that’ in the sentence. = omit it, not include it.
Cross/ run something out
Some of the names on the list had been crossed/ rubbed out.
Go out
Suddenly all the lights in the building went out.
Put out
I managed to put the fire/ cigarette out.
Turn out
I turned the lights out before leaving.
Blow out
We don’t need the candle. You can blow it out.
Work out
Bob works out at gym three times a week. = do physical exercise.
I hope everything works out well for you. / things didn’t work out well. = develop, progress
That works out at $50 each. 345x76? I can’t work it out in my head. = calculate mathematically/ find the answer.
Carry out
Soldiers are expected to Carry out orders. An investigation/ survey will be carried out.
Fall out ( with somebody )
I am surprised to hear that they have fallen out.
Bob fell out with his father and left out. = stop being friends
Find out
The police never found out who committed the murder. = get information.
Give/ hand things out
At the end of the lecture, the speaker gave out information sheets to the audience. = give to each person
