Photosynthesis + Transpiration Flashcards
What does the xylem do?
Carries water up the plant to the leaves
What does the phloem do?
Transports sugar from the leaves to the rest of the plant
What two ions are needed for plant growth?
Nitrate and magnesium ions
What are plant defences?
Protective mechanisms that prevent disease
What three kinds of plant defences are there?
Physical, chemical and mechanical
What is a limiting factor?
A factor in the environment that controls photosynthesis
What is transpiration?
The movement of water out the stomata
What are the three limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Temperature, CO2 concentration and light intensity
How do you balance the photosynthesis equation
A six in front of all of them but glucose
Why don’t roots have chloroplasts?
They’re underground
What is the chemical equation for glucose
C6H12O6
Why does transpiration happen?
Osmosis makes water leave the plant and water moves back up in a chain
Is photosynthesis an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Ending thermic
Why is photosynthesis important?
Moves CO2 from environment and provides glucose for the plant to grow
What is the green pigment in chloroplasts called?
Chlorophyll
