Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The spreading of particles from a high to low concentration, down a concentration gradient until equilibrium is met
What does passive mean?
Requires no energy
Name 3 things that move in and out of your body
Water, CO2, toxins, urea, oxygen, glucose
What are the three main factors that effect diffusion?
Temperature, surface area and concentration
What does semi permeable mean?
Allows some substances to pass but not others
What are the adaptations of exchange surfaces?
Large surface area, thin membranes and efficient blood supply
What is the surface area: volume ratio?
The amount of surface area per volume of an object
What diffuses in and out of the lungs?
Oxygen diffuses into the the blood and the lungs get CO2 to breath out
What is active transport?
It is the movement of substances from a low concentration to high concentration, against a concentration gradient and it requires energy, unlike diffusion
What is osmosis?
It is the movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
What’s the difference between osmosis and diffusion?
Osmosis is in specifically warer whilst diffusion is not
What are the 3 stages of amounts of water in a plant cell?
Hypertonic, Isotonic and Hypotonic
Why does a hypotonic blood cell pop whilst a hypotonic plant cell does not?
The plant cell has a cell wall which strengthens the cell whilst the blood cell does not
What does a percentage change allow you to do?
Allows a comparison of data
