Photosynthesis (Miss Reynolds) Flashcards
Organic
A compound that contains carbon e.g CO2/lipids.
Inorganic
A compound that does not contain carbon e.g phosphate.
Co-enzymes
Non protein molecules that help enzymes to work by transferring the molecules.
Phosphorylation
Adding a phosphate.
Electron Transport Chain
When electrons flow through proteins in a membrane.
Metabolic pathway
A series of small reactions controlled by enzymes e.g photosynthesis.
Decarboxylation
The removal of carbon dioxide from a molecule.
Dehydrogenation
The removal of hydrogen from a molecule.
What does light dependent reaction produce?
ATP
What does light independent reaction produce?
Glucose
Which type of light reaction uses light directly?
Light dependant reaction
Chemiosmosis
Name of the process where the movement of H+ ions across a membrane creates ATP.
What happens during the light dependant reaction?
Uses light energy to make two molecules needed for the next stage of photosynthesis. ATP and reduced electron carrier NADPH.
Where do light reactions take place?
In the chloroplasts
What happens during the light Independant reaction?
Photosynthesis not requiring light can proceed and ultimately produce organic molecules from carbon dioxide. ATP drives this.
