photosynthesis gr11 Flashcards
Carbohydrate
large group organic compounds in cells, including glucose, sucrose, and starch.
chloroplast
A plastid in green plant cells, contains chlorophyll, where photosynthesis takes place.
cuticle
A PROTECTIVE and WAXY LAYER covering the epidermis of a plant
epidermal cells
Transparent cells in outer layer of a plant organ. These cells DO NOT contain chloroplasts.
guard cells
Curved cells containing chloroplasts that surround a stoma. These cells open and close the stomata(pores)
glucose
A simple sugar
energy source (living organisms)
a component of many carbohydrates.
An organelle found in large numbers in cells, in which the cellular respiration and energy production occur.
Mitochondrion
nucleus
A dense organelle in most eukaryotic cells, a rounded structure bound by a double membrane, contains the genetic material.
Palisade mesophyll
- A layer of tall, thin cells containing many chloroplasts. found under the upper epidermis of the leaf.
parenchyma
Photosynthesizing cells containing chloroplasts
phloem
The vascular tissue in plants which conducts sugars and other metabolic products downwards from the leaves.
The inner tissue (parenchyma) of a leaf, containing many
chloroplasts. These cells are loosely packed and have many air
spaces between them
Spongy Mesophyll
starch
stored carbohydrates in plants
stoma(ta)
Opening in surface of leaves
allow gases to move in and out
Vacuole
- An oranelle in the cytoplasm, enclosed by a membrane, containing fluid.
