eutrophication Flashcards
what does eutrophication cause
excessive richness of nutrients in a body of water, usually due to run - off from the land, causing a dense growth of plant life
first process of eutroph.
leaching/nutrient load up
- nutrients from fertilizers are flushed from the land into rivers/lakes
second process of eutroph.
plants flourish
- pollutants cause algal bloom
- e.g algae, duckweed
third process of eutroph
algae blooms
- prevents sunlight reaching other plants
- other plants die, causing oxygen depletion
fourth process of eutroph
decomposition further depletes oxygen
- dead plants are broken down down by bacteria, using up more oxygen
eutrophication
chemical fertilisers from farms run off into freshwater, causing algal blooms and depleting the water of oxygen and other plants. even more oxygen is depleted by bacteria decomposers, ending in death of an ecosystem bc of critical oxygen levels
