Q

Light Dependent Stage

A

In the absence of light this stage cannot proceed and photosynthesis will stop.
Occurs in the chloroplast’s thylakoids.

Produces O2 gas and H+ ions which are carried by coenzyme NADPH to give energy in light independent stage.

Q

Light Independent Stage

A

Uses charged NADPH molecule for energy.

Does not depend directly on light being available.

Occurs in the Stroma.

Q

Chloroplast

A

Site of photosynthesis in plants and algae.

Possesses DNA that consists of circular double-stranded DNA, not nuclear.
Divides via binary fission
Contains its own ribosomes

Q

Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis

A

Light Intensity - chlorophyll requires light to conduct the dependent reactions,

Temperature - photosynthesis enzymes and reactant molecules move more rapidly with increasing temperature,

Carbon Dioxide concentration - reactant for light-independent stage, as CO2 rises, the rate of photosynthesis will increase until the active sites of enzymes involved in photosynthetic reactions are saturated
