Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The process in which light energy is transformed into chemical energy and stored in organic molecules. Occurs in the chloroplast
Balanced equation
12H2O + 6CO2 = C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
Stages of photosynthesis
Light dependant, light independent
Light Dependent Stage
In the absence of light this stage cannot proceed and photosynthesis will stop.
Occurs in the chloroplast’s thylakoids.
Produces O2 gas and H+ ions which are carried by coenzyme NADPH to give energy in light independent stage.
Light Independent Stage
Uses charged NADPH molecule for energy.
Does not depend directly on light being available.
Occurs in the Stroma.
Function of Photosynthesis
Overall function is to trap light energy and convert it to chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH
Inputs of Light Dependent
Water, NADP, ADP
Inputs of Light Independent
NADPH, Carbon Dioxide, ATP
Outputs of Light Dependent
NADPH, Oxygen, ATP
Outputs of Light Independent
NADP, Water, ADP, Pi, Glucose
Function of NADP/NADPH
Collects hydrogen ions for the transport to the light independent stage
Function of ATP
Energy carrier when charged with Pi. Energy is used in the light independent phase
Functions of Water
Source of hydrogen ions for making glucose
Functions of Carbon Dioxide
Source of carbon and oxygen ions for making glucose
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis in plants and algae.
Possesses DNA that consists of circular double-stranded DNA, not nuclear.
Divides via binary fission
Contains its own ribosomes
