Photosynthesis Flashcards
How is photosynthesis both a biological and chemical process?
- It is a biological process because it is how a living things (plants) make their own food
- It is a chemical process because it changes light energy chemical energy
What is the word and chemical equation for photosynthesis?
Word equation: carbon dioxide+water –sunlight–chlorophll–> glucose+oxygen
Chemical equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O –light–chlorophyll–> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is photosynthesis and what factors are necessary?
- Photosynthesis is how plants make their food
- Light, water, temperature, CO2, chlorophyll, others eg. surface area of the leaf
How does light effect the rate of photosynthesis?
Leafs have flat surfaces so that they can absorb as much light as possible. Light provides energy.
High light intensity- photosynthesis increases
Low light intensity- photosynthesis decreases
-Rate of photosynthesis will stay constant if there is not enough of another factor
How does carbon dioxide effect the rate of photosynthesis?
CO2 passes through the stomata on leaves
High CO2 availability: photosynthesis will increase
Low CO2 availabilty: photosynthesis will decrease
-Rate of photosynthesis will stay constant if there is not enough of another factor
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is an enzyme controlled process
Enzymes cannot function outside of their optimum temperature range.
The ideal temperature is 20C-30C
How is water and chlorophyll necessary for photosynthesis to occur?
Water- taken from the soil taken up through roots to stem and leaves
Chlorophyll- the green pigment in chloroplasts in the plant cell that absorbs light
What are the products of photosynthesis?
Glucose- provides energy for plant, forms starch and new cells for growth
Oxygen- released out of leaf into the air, provides energy for respiration
