Atoms And Elements Flashcards
What is an atom and what is an element?
-An atom is the smallest part of an element which still keeps the properties of the element
Sub atomic particles: protons, neutrons (nucleus) electrons (orbit shell)
-protons = positive change 1 a.m.u
-neutrons = no charge 1 a.m.u
-electrons = negative charge 1/1840 a.m.u
-smaller number = atomic number (protons) // mass number = protons and neutrons // atomic-mass = neutrons
What is the periodic table and how is it arranged?
Periodic table is a list of all the elements, represented by their symbols
Periods- horizontal rows as you go across the table
Groups- vertical rows down the table
Group 1- alkali metals
Group 2- alkaline earth metals
Group 7- Halogens
Group 8/0- noble gases
What are compounds and chemical bonds?
Compound is formed when 2 or more elements join together chemically
Chemical bonds form when the atom looses or gains or shares electrons to a get a full outer shell
-loose/gain electrons = ionic bond
-share electrons = covalent bond
valencey = number of electrons a atom needs to lose or gain for a full outer shell
What are elements?
-Elements is a simple substance that cannot be split into any simpler substances by chemical means
What is ionic bonding and ions?
Ionic bonding formed when atoms lose or gain electrons to get a full outer shell
Gains elements = negatively charged
Loses elements = positively charge
-Ions are changed atoms after they’ve lost/gained atoms eg. Sodium looses an electron to fork the sodium ion // Na atoms lose electrons - forms NA+ ion
Elements, compounds and mixtures diagram
Elements: just one element
Compound: two or more elements mixed together
Mixture: two together
