photosynthesis Flashcards
what does sunlight do in photosynthesis?
gives the plant energy
what does water do in photosynthesis?
travels through the xylem
what does carbon dioxide do in photosynthesis?
enters through stomata on the underside of leaf
what is chlorophyll?
green pigment in the chloroplast where the chemical reaction happens
what does glucose do in photosynthesis?
used by the leaf as a food source
what does oxygen do in photosynthesis?
diffuses from cell/released from leaf
what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
light energy
carbon dioxide + water —-> glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll
what is the first stage of photosynthesis called?
light reaction
what happens during light reaction?
light energy from the sun is trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of green plants
light energy is then converted into chemical energy to generate ATP
water is split to produce hydrogen and oxygen (photolysis)
oxygen is a by-product which diffuses from the cell
what is light energy converted into?
chemical energy
what is the equation for the production of ATP?
ADP + Pi –> ATP
what is the second stage of photosynthesis called?
carbon fixation
what is carbon fixation?
a series of enzyme controlled reactions, which uses hydrogen and ATP (produced during stage one) with carbon dioxide to produce sugar (glucose)
what is produced during stage one of photosynthesis?
- ATP
- hydrogen
- oxygen (byproduct)
glucose
- used for respiration
- produces ATP for cellular activites
