Photosynthesis Flashcards
What happens when a photon hits matter
It can be reflected
Transmit straight through
Absorbed
This all depends on the energy (wavelength)
Anabolism
metabolic pathways that build more complex molecules from simpler ones.
Requires the input of of energy
Endergonic(requires energy from sunlight
Autotrophs
Organisms that produce their own food using light, water, carbon dioxide and other chemicals
some examples, plants, some protist, algae, and cyanobacteria
What happens in photosynthesis
energy, carbon dioxide and water are put into the system to create glucose and oxygen
What is reduced and oxidized during photosynthesis
carbon dioxide is reduced because it gains electrons
oxygen in the water is oxidized because it loses electrons.
this reaction is endergonic: it requires energy input
What are the two major stages photosynthesis occurs in
Light Reactions, and Calvin Cycle
All you know about Light reaction
It takes (water), (light); It also takes (NADP+) from Calvin cycle and (ADP+ (+) Phosphate)
Location is on the Thylakoid membrane
The output is oxygen, It gives (ATP) and (NADPH) to the Calvin Cycle
This reaction only happens in the light
Calvin Cycle
It takes carbon dioxide; It takes (NADPH) and (ATP) from light reactions
For the Calvin Cycle to proceed in the dark it needs (NADPH) and (ATP)
ADP and NADP+ are oxidized
The enzymes of the Calvin cycle are in the stroma
What are the components of light reactions
Photosystems 1 and 2, ETC, and ATP synthesis
Photosystems 1 and 2
Large complexes of proteins and pigments that help collect light energy
PS 1 tends to absorbs light of longer wavelengths (greater than 680) red
PS 2 tends to absorb shorter wavelengths (less than 680) purple
Grana
Stacked thylakoids
Stroma
Space between the double membrane and the the thylakoid membrane
Lumen
Space inside the thylakoid membrane
Relationship between the thylakoids and thylakoids membrane
The thylakoid membrane forms the thylakoid
Pigments
Molecules that can absorb photons
