Evolution and speciation Flashcards
What is Microevolution?
What is Microevolution
What is Artificial Selection?
Humans actively select for certain species to produce favorable traits.
Traits must be variable in species and heritable
What is Divergence
What is Convergent Evolution
Completely different species evolve similar traits to adapt to the environment.
What is Analogous Structure
Similar structures in organisms without shared ancestry
What is Speciation
The process through which one species splits into two species
What is Divergent Evolution
Original Structure diverged into different structures.
Different organisms with same ancestors developed traits based on the different enviroment
Homologous Structures
Similar structure but different functions due to natural selection over time
Homology
Similarity resulting from common ancestry
Homologous gene
Gene that is shared by ancestry. (shows relationship between species
Vestigial Structure
A function in past ancestral species that is no longer used in modern-day species
Relative Fitness
Contribution an individual makes to the gene pool RELATIVE to other individuals in that population
Descent with Modification
Traits of different species with common ancestors are passed on from parents to offspring sometimes with modifications due to their diverse environment
Adaptive Radiation
Rapid diversify of species with a common ancestor due to change in enviroment
