Photosynthesis Flashcards
what type of reaction is Photosynthesis
Endothermic reaction because takes energy from surroundings
limiting factor
- CO2
- Light
- Temperature
Temperature
Metabolic reaction so catalyses enzymes.
Too hot = denatures enzymes
Too cold = no energy to collide
As temp increases so does rate of photosynthesis
Light
no light no photosynthesis
An increase in light means an increase in the rate of photosynthesis
CO2
CO2 is a reactant without the reactant photosynthesis cannot happen. An increase in CO2 = an increase in the rate of photosynthesis
Adaptations of leaves
Thin: short diffusion for CO2
Large surface area: maximise absorption
Chlorophyll: absorbs sunlight
Network of veins : to support the leaf and transfer water and minerals
Stomata: allows CO2 to diffuse in , O2 out
Epidermis
Thin and transparent to allow light to reach the palisade cells
Cuticle
Thin and made of wax to prevent infection and stop water loss
Palisade cells
contains chloroplasts to absorb all available light and increase rate of photosynthesis
Spongy layer
Air spaces to allow diffusion of CO2 through leaf
Plant roots
Absorb minerals (Magnesium and nitrate) from soil for healthy growth of plant by active transport
Magnesium
needed to make chlorophyll and deficiency turns leaves yellow
