Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which plants take energy from the sun and convert it into glucose for energy
What is required for a plant to complete photosynthesis?
CO2, sunlight, and water
What do plants produce by way of photosynthesis?
ATP and oxygen
Are plant autotrophs or heterotrophs?
Autotrophs
How many phosphates does ATP contain?
3, think tri
How is energy released by way of ATP?
Removing the third phosphate by breaking the hydrogen bond
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
What are the structures in a chloroplast?
Stroma (the cytoplasm), Thylakoids (the disk-like things), and Granum (the stacks of thylakoids)
Where do light reactions take place?
Thylakoids
Where do dark reactions take place?
Stroma
What byproduct (waste) does photosynthesis produce?
Oxygen
Why are chloroplasts green?
It absorbs all wavelengths of light except for green, which it reflects
What does the Calvin cycle need to take place?
CO2, ATP, and NADPH
Which comes first, Photosystem II or Photosystem I?
Photosystem II
What does the Calvin cycle produce?
Sugar, oxygen and NADP+
